HUNGER GAMES – THE MOVIE

Our classes will be attending the opening day showing of Hunger Games at Celebration Cinema on March 23 at 11:15am.  Permission slips were sent home with the students this week.  The movie is rated PG-13The cost is $8.50.  We will not have a chance to eat lunch at school so  your student may bring a simple lunch to eat on the bus.  Also, Celebration Cinema has discounted prices on popcorn and pop combos.  A small combo is $3.50 and a medium combo is $4.50.  If you need some assistance paying for the movie please contact me at 623-6120 ext 310 or vossk@dansville.org and we will make sure to help.

The students have loved reading the book and we can’t wait to see the movie.

January Update

The end of the first semester is here.  The students finished reading Hunger Games and have begun to read Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagzia. “Immaculée shares her miraculous story of how she survived during the Rwanda genocide in 1994 when she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor’s house for 91 days! In this captivating and inspiring book, Immaculée shows us how to embrace the power of prayer, forge a profound and lasting relationship with God, and discover the importance of forgiveness and the meaning of truly unconditional love and understanding—through our darkest hours.” ( http://www.lefttotell.com/index.php )

We also continue to work with new vocabulary words by breaking them down by syllables and sounds.  We create our own correct definitions instead of memorizing from the dictionary.  Another crucial part of time is spent working on reading fluency.  The students read a passage each day for 1 min.  That same passage is read all week to increase their speed and accuracy.  The students enjoy charting their progress on their chart and beating their goal.

Another section of PowerReading has been add to our school’s schedule.  I will be teaching this class 4th hour.  4th hour is a block – meaning 86 minutes instead of 45 minutes so we will be doing a great deal more writing and editing.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Second and Third Hour is currently read Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  All of our vocabulary and comprehesion activities are from our reading of Hunger Games.  Hunger Games is a story about Katniss and Peeta who live in District 12.  Each year an adolescent is chosen to be part of the Hunger Games.  The actual Hunger Games are a bit like the TV show survivor, but in order to win you must be the last one living.  The movie comes out March 23, 2011.  Please go the following link to view the trailer to the movie. http://youtu.be/4S9a5V9ODuY  Also, many of the students have already finished the book on their own and are currently reading the second book in the trilogy.  I LOVE THAT!!!

The classes have also begun a reading intervention called 6 Minute Solutions.  The purpose is to increase their reading accuracy and quickness.  The students are enjoying tracking their progress.
