Week of Jan 16, 2012

January 17th, 2012

Hi,

Tuesday: finished and handed in the Mole Ratios lab with silver….very cool! Also, took notes on stoichiometry problems involving energy… stoichiometry energy Standard C3.1d … also, as part of the final exam review p. 319 all problems was assigned….

Wednesday: we will study volume of gases stoichiometry problems… stoichiometry volumes of gases Standard C5.2f … and review for Thursday’s unit 9 assessment…

Thursday: Unit 9 assessment on stoichiometry… don’t forget to get the Unit 10 syllabus!… Unit 10 chemistry with marzano rubric 2012… we will get some notes on the kinetic theory of gases and states of matter… hopefully, this information is a bit of review… to learn more read chapter 13…

Friday: gas laws day! Read chapter 14, take notes and complete this lab…you can do it at home over the internet! … Gases Properties pHet Lab

What we don’t finish this week I want to rap up on Monday…next week is the final exam…it is a good idea to start prepping for it!

week of Jan 9…Stoichiometry!

January 13th, 2012

Hi,

This week we worked on Stoichiometry:

Monday: test of standard C4.1a and read p. 353-362 and answer p. 358 #3, 4, 9…this is about being able to interpret chemical equations in terms of particles, moles, volumes of gases, and mass.

Tuesday: We built the Mole to Mole Bridge! This allows us to change chemical recipes…

stoichiometry mol to mol

Wednesday: We studied mass to mass stoichiometry problems!

stoichiometry mass to mass Standard C5

Thursday: More mass to mass stoichiometry!

stoichiometry mass to mass.2 Standard C5

Friday: the stoichiometry lab!

The plan: p.310 #36,37 and p. 312 #45, 46 and Tier III Read p. 311-312 and do    p. 312 #38,39…also finish the lab

Tues and Wed Jan 3 and 4

January 4th, 2012

Hi,

Long time since the last post. I hope everyone has had a terrific holiday season and begun the new year with gusto!

We started yesterday reviewing percent composition and mass to mole conversion problems (like from unit 7) and learned how to use this information to determine the empirical formula of a compound. This will help us with the stoichiometry unit. A good place to get a refresher on these topics is chapter 10.

We also were asked to complete various problems: p. 306#32-35…

Tuesday we did a lab that helped us practice determining empirical formulas experimentally:

Here is the lab:  magnesium oxide lab We will finish some of the math on the lab tomorrow

In addition I assigned p. 315 #63 a and b, 64 a and b, and 67

Tuesday, Dec 6…last day for me til’ next week

December 6th, 2011

Hi,

Tuesday is my last day at school this week. Myself along with 3 others from Dansville Schools have been invited to Portland, OR to present at a Grading and Assessment Conference. This is the first time I have ever presented at a conference and I am a little excited. It is hard to believe that someone would pay my expenses to travel all the way to the Left Coast and present! The best part is Dansville Schools is paying nothing and making a little bit back. The real upside is that our school is getting attention and recognition for some of the innovations that we are instituting to help our students succeed! It is a little unreal.

Tuesday we are going to finish up percent compostion, open up unit 8 on chemical reactions and equations! The Law of Conservation of Mass is reviewed and applied to chemical equations.

Look at the new syllabus!

Unit 8 chemical reactions and equations notes 2011

tomorrow I will try to post the lesson plans for the next 3 days and the balancing equations worksheets for Tuesday’s lesson!

Ta-ta!

MOnday, Dec 5 and a few days past

December 6th, 2011

Hi,

Sorry to be a little behind the times. Life gets busy. Last week we took notes on various mole problems. I was very pleased by how well many people took to the idea and the notes! Nice work! In case you missed it, Thur and Fri featured converting mass to moles and moles to mass and particles to moles and moles to particles. At the end of Friday, everyone was asked to look at the Mole Road Map and figure out a plan to convert mass to number of particles…of course one must go through moles to make the conversion! Check out the notes docs. If you didn’t get the notes, ask someone that did!

What is the molar mass of particle

What is the molar mass of

Today was the ever-famous “How Long would it take to write a mole of carbon atoms?” lab!

Then we worked on percent composition of a compound…

Percent Composition of a Compound ws

tomorrow is more of the same and the beginnings of Unit 8 on chemical reactions and equations.

Hi,

Today was finish taking data for the lab, postlab questions for homework, and take notes on molar mass calculations!

See the following notes and homework sheets:

mole road map ws notes We took notes on this sheet…

mole to mass of an element ws YOu were assigned the a-e (molar masses of elements) at the top of the first page and a-e (number of moles given the mass)at the top of the second page.

Hi,

Mole Power! Today was a lesson and lab on counting by weighing with the intent of having the postlab questions as homework.

more moles tomorrow!
