Dansville FFA Competes at the National FFA Convention
The National FFA convention was held from October 19-22 in Indiana. Over 50,000 FFA members from across the country arrived in Indianapolis to experience the largest youth conference in the United States. The Dansville FFA sent 8 members and 8 parents to this year’s conference. The students had the opportunity to attend sessions and workshops to learn how to make the most of their FFA experience. They also visited a career fair that included Agriculture industry and college representatives.
Last July, the Dansville FFA team won the State Dairy Cattle evaluation contest at Michigan State, and this qualified the team to compete in the National contest. The team then spent the rest of the fall and summer training with the Michigan State Dairy judging team and Ingham county 4H teams. The team placed 26th out of 43 teams at the National Convention sponsored by Dean Foods. This earned them a silver team award. The team members included Kailey Sweers and Lucas Moser who earned silver individual awards and Annabeth and Lauralee Musolf who both earned bronze individual awards. The team would like to thank all of the sponsors that covered the cost of the trip; they include Greenstone farm credit, Jorgenson’s elevator, Dansville Vet clinic and Swan fuel. We are very appreciative of all the backing from the community.
Another important event that took place at the convention was the American degree ceremony. The American degree is the highest degree that an FFA member can receive, and we had two members, Jacquelyn Heuer and Christopher Weber, receive their degrees this year. This award is based on their supervised Agricultural experience, FFA involvement and activities, and community service records.
Mrs. Amanda Sturm, the Dansville FFA advisor, also presented at the conventions as a member of the DuPont National Agriscience Teacher Ambassador Academy. Mrs. Sturm was one of 20 teachers chosen out of 140 candidates. She traveled to Maryland in July to receive a week of intense training on inquiry education. She will also be presenting at the National Association of Agriscience Educators annual conference in St. Louis in November. We are so proud of our program and all things they accomplished this year. Way to go Aggies!
