Course Descrition:

A general English course designed to introduce the student to writing and literature. Emphasis is placed on correctness in oral and written language. Research skills are reviewed and a major term paper is required. Daily homework and tests in grammar, spelling, and reading are required.

Course Title: SOPHOMORE ENGLISH

Prerequisites: Freshman English

Course Description:

A general English course designed to introduce students to forms in literature; for example: novel, short story, drama, and poetry. Research skills are reviewed and a major research paper is required. Basic grammar skills are also reviewed. There will be daily writing and reading. Grades will based on unit tests covering forms and examples of literature and basic grammar; writing, including both daily writing and longer term writing assignments, and reading, both required and free choice, will be required.

Course Description:

Study voice, movement, character development, using sense memory, subtext, performance games, improvisation, and learned scenes. Student will learn to project, articulate, and breathing techniques. Evaluation will be based on involvement, participation, and improved performance.

Course Title: ADVANCED COMPOSITION

Course Description:

Advanced writing is opent to students who have successfully completed basic writing, and is strongly recommended for students who wish to further their careers at a junior college or beyond. One nine week period will concentrate upon expository writing, during which students will learn research skills, analytical writing skills, and term paper skills. Students will be required to submit three, ten page term papers. Creative writing wil consist of one nine weeks of creative thinking and creative expression, culminating in short stories, plays, and poetry. This 18 weeks involves writing each day and submitting a creative notebook at the end of the term. Tests will also be given. A college preparatory class.

Course Title: AMERICAN LITERATURE

Course Description:

American Literature is strongly recommended for all students interested in their heritage and American thought and language. Major American authors will be studied and close examination of literary terms, trends, and ideas will be emphasized. Reading from an American Literature anthology will be assigned. In addition, minor and major papers will be required. Discussion and participation are also required.

Course Description:

This advanced English class will study novels from England, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa, and the United States. The authors will include Golding, Hesse, Paton, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, and Faulkner. Nine weeks of this time will be devoted to an American Novel of the 1900's. Grades will be based on research projects, papers, tests, and essays. Writing will be stressed with instruction in writing and analytical paper and a comparison paper. This class is recommended for college bound students.

Course Description:

A basic English course covering 'job getting skills' such as applications, resumés, letters of introduction, interviews, thank-you letters; English related skills used throughout a person's life, such as: letter writing, newspaper skills, graph, charts, map reading, information-getting skills, current fiction, and statistic analysis. There will be oral reports, writing, and tests. This is not counted as a core English class by four-year colleges/universities.

Course Description:

Science fiction/fantasy and mystery and detective stories will be explored. Speculation of the future, myth making, and alternative worlds will be discussed in the science fiction/fantasy section. Readers of mystery and detective fiction will examine crime and the hero and anti-hero. Several papers and a final project will be required for this course. Students will be exposed to mature themes and content. This is a college preparatory class.

Course Title: YOUNG ADULT FICTION

Course Description:

Fiction will be selected from the School Library Journal's Best Books Review for the year. Students will study various authors and subjects but all books will be especially written the the young adult in mind and most will be award winners. At least one paper per book will be required as will tests and a multi-media project. There may be a fee charged for purchase of paperback books. This is a college preparatory course.
