			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dansville Schools is proud to partner with Mason Public Schools in offering an Anti-Bullying and Bullying Prevention workshop for our parents.  This parent awareness session, featuring presenter Kevin Honeycutt from the Educational Services and Staff Development Association of Central Kansas, will take place on Thursday, May 3rd from 7-9 pm in the Mason High School auditorium.</p>
<p>We <strong>STRONGLY</strong> encourage all parents to attend this presentation which is guaranteed to be highly engaging and entertaining while at the same time helping parents increase awareness of bullying, cyber-bullying and online safety.  This event has been promoted throughout the district at Parent-Teacher conferences and other district events.  If you need more information, please contact your child&#8217;s school office.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dansville Schools Reproductive Health Education Advisory Committee presented a proposal to teach HIV/AIDS prevention during the 2011-12 school year.  At this time, our district has not adopted a reproductive health curriculum.  Schools are mandated to teach HIV/AIDS prevention as stated in Michigan Compiled Law 380.1169:  &#8220;School districts are required to teach about dangerous communicable diseases, including, but not limited to HIV/AIDS.  Instruction regarding dangerous communicable diseases, including, but not limited to, HIV/AIDS, must be offered at least once a year at every building level (elementary, middle/junior, senior high)&#8221;.  The proposal presented to the Dansville School Board of Education on January 23, 2012 included the following:</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline">Elementary</span>:  Implement the 4th grade Michigan Model HIV education curriculum in grades 4 and 5.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline">Middle School</span>:  Implement the 5th grade Michigan Model HIV Education curriculum in grades 6 and 8.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline">High School</span>:  Implement the 5th grade Michigan Model HIV Education curriculum and the Michigan Model for Health:  Healthy and Responsible Relationships, Lesson 7 (pages 99-118) in grades 9 and 12.</p>
<p><strong>Fourth and Fifth Grade student learning outcomes are following;</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Define HIV and AIDS.</li>
<li>Identify how HIV is and is not transmitted.</li>
<li>Identify ways people can protect themselves from infection with HIV and other blood-borne infections, including not touching blod and used hypodermic or tattoo needles.</li>
<li>Explain that it is safe to be a friend of someone who is living with HIV or AIDS.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Ninth and Twelfth Grade</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Recognize teens&#8217; vulnerability to HIV infection.</li>
<li>Summarize the physical, social, and emotional impacts of HIV and Aids on teens and society.</li>
<li>Summarize the impact of HIV and AIDS on friends, family, and future dreams.</li>
<li>Identify reputable sources of information.</li>
<li>Demonstrate how to contact resources appropriately.</li>
<li>Assess personal perception of risk for HIV and other STDs.</li>
<li>Identify abstinence from sex as the most effective way to prevent infection.</li>
</ul>
<p>If the proposal is adopted, parents and/or legal guardians must and will be notified in advance of:</p>
<ul>
<li>The <strong>content</strong> of the instruction.</li>
<li>Their<strong> right</strong> to review materials in advance.</li>
<li>Their <strong>right</strong> to observe instruction.</li>
<li>Their <strong>right</strong> to excuse their child without penalty.</li>
</ul>
<p>The Reproductive Health Education Advisory Committee has been meeting once a month since February 2011.  The meetings and minutes are posted.  The next meeting is February 6, 2012 in the elementary library.  The Reproductive Health Education Advisory Committee is co-chaired by Krista Voss and Elizabeth Graf.  Addie Price, Amanda Ragon, Kristy Cook, Andy Cox, Laura Launstein, Jan Sweers, Heather Hause, Sara Oesterle, Jim McNally and Steve Ezop are members.</p>
