March News

March is “Reading and Music Month” here at Dansville Elementary School.  This year’s theme is Read to Feed – Children Changing the World.  It is based on the Read to Feed program from Heifer International.  As our students read books, they also bring in loose change which is collected in our “piggy bank.”  The money collected will be donated to buy pigs for families in third world countries.  These pigs will be used to breed other pigs – which will then be given to other families.  It is the hope of the program that all these families will become more self-sufficient and improve their standard of living.

Along with collecting money and reading books, we will have other music and reading-related activities.  Every Wednesday will be S.E.A.L day. That stands for Stop Everything and Listen as Ms Massaro or Mrs. Wilson will showcase some music related to our theme.  There will be two assemblies during the month.  Aaron Zentz, author and illustrator of “Hiccopotamus” will be here on the 8th, and Mobile Education will present a program with unusual (for schools) animals on the 28th. That is also Safari Day – so come dressed for the occasion.  There will also be special “dress-up” days – hat day, crazy socks day, and T-shirt day, as will as “Bring your Stuffed Animal to School” day.  Last, but certainly not least, is a weekly “D.E.A.R” time – Drop Everything and Read.

In the neighborhood?  Drop in and join us as we celebrate music and reading during March.

Welcome back to another school year!

Open Houses/Meet the Teacher nightswill be held Wednesday evening, August 30th, with a light supper available in the cafeteria. Fall parent-teacher conferences will be on Wednesday October 11 and Thursday October 12 (4-7 P.M.)   Please try to attend any orientation session that might be given by your child’s classroom teacher.

Remember that MEAP testing will be administered during October (instead of January), and will be given to students in grades 3, 4, and 5.  Each grade will take an English Language Arts test (reading, writing, grammar) and a Math test.  Fifth graders will also be taking the Science MEAP.  The Social Studies exam has moved to sixth grade.

The Literacy Center will be seeing students in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. Students in grade 5 will remain in their classrooms, with material, strategies, and instructional help being given directly to the classroom teacher.  Classrooms will be incorporating more guided reading groups (K-2) or literature circles (3-5) to better accommodate individual needs and learning styles.

For students who will be receiving help from the Literacy Center this year, letters will go home before the sessions begin, informing you if your child needs/will receive service, and what the exact starting date will be.

An informational session for parents of first graders, explaining the program, will be held sometime in October.  Information will be sent home closer to the date (still to be determined).
