Gifted & Talented Resources

NUMATS

NUMATS is a research-validated program that utilizes above-grade-level
testing to help you understand the educational needs of your child. NUMATS will
also help you interpret test results and access quality resources and programs.

Eligibility

  • Participated in NUMATS or another talent search program
  • Receive a teacher or parent nomination because they demonstrate advanced
    aptitude in verbal or mathematical reasoning or consistently demonstrate a
    high level of performance on demanding coursework or often request more challenging
    academic experiences
  • Meet grade-level assessment criteria in either verbal/reading or math on
    a nationally normed or state achievement test

NUMATS Timeline

Early September

  • Online registration begins.
  • Use paper registration only if internet is not available.

After registration is finalized by NUMATS

  • Access the online NUMATS Toolbox to make use of test prep materials and
    other resources.

Two weeks before test date

  • If your child registered by paper and has not received a mailed copy of test
    preparations materials
    , call NUMATS at 847/491-3782 extension 3.

One week before test date

  • If your child has not received a test center admission ticket,
    call the testing agency:

Test date

  • The test center admission ticket tells you when and where to go and what
    to bring on test day. Make certain your child brings this admission ticket
    and, if taking ACT or SAT, the student identification form to the test center.

If your child misses his/her test date

  • Call the testing agency to reschedule; you do not need to reregister.

Several weeks after the test date

  • Check the online NUMATS Toolbox for access to your child’s scores and interpretative
    information; students and schools have online access to follow-up materials
    as soon as scores are available.

About five weeks after the test date

  • You will receive an official testing agency score report in the mail.

March

  • Eligible students receive information about CTD’s summer and online programs.
  • Visit the online NUMATS Toolbox for a newly updated version of CTD’s Educational
    Program Guide.

April-May

  • NUMATS recognition certificates are mailed.

May-August

  • NUMATS and state award ceremonies are held.

Elementary & Middle School

GATE Saturday School

GATE Saturday School provides enrichment opportunities for students who have
given evidence of potential in the visual or performing arts, science and technology,
as well as for students who have outstanding academic abilities. Programs are
offered throughout the fall months for students in grades 2-8. Students must
receive a recommendation from a classroom teacher and have written parental permission
in order to participate.

Middle School – Ingham ISD Programs

GIRLS MATH/SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE

A half day conference designed to stimulate the participant’s interest in mathematics,
science, and technology; to broaden their awareness of career options; to motivate
girls to elect higher-level math and science courses in high school and college;
to provide female role models and possible mentors.

MASCOT

(Mathematics Augmentation Series: Cultivating Optimum Teaching) designed to serve
students who have been identified as having potential for learning advanced mathematics
but lack some of the skills needed for total success. This program model allows
for development in the content area of mathematics, as well as, for better self-understanding
through the use of specific guidance strategies and techniques.

Middle & High School – MSU School Year Programs

CHAMP

An accelerated Math program at Michigan State University for students in grades
7-10. Students will learn in two years the content assigned in HSCE aligned four-year
high school mathematics curriculum and national core curriculum standards. Students
will take Algebra I and Algebra II in the first year. In the second year, CHAMP
students study Geometry and pre-calculus.

LEAF

An accelerated French Language program at Michigan
State University for students in grades 7-11. Students will learn in two
years the traditional four-year high school French language curriculum. In
their first year, students will cover French 1 and French 2, as well as work
on additional enrichment activities to enhance student proficiency. In the second
year, LEAF students will study material equivalent to French 3 and French 4
with special emphasis on reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Middle & High School – MSU Summer Programs

CSI Forensics Program

A one-week residential program from June 17-June
23 at Michigan State University. Curriculum is intended for academically able
students who are currently in grades 7, 8, and 9, and at least 12 years old.

Eligibility

  • Provide documentation for a strong standardized test score (SAT, ACT, Tier
    1 MEAP in Science)
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Positive teacher recommendation from a current science teacher
  • Strong interest in science

High Achievers

High Achievers is a program for academically talented students
currently in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 who are seeking to earn college credit
while still in high school. Those enrolled in this program will complete honors-level
college courses in Biotechnology, Economics, or Philosophy at MSU in four weeks
and earn transferable credit.

ACT: English 22 and Composite 21, or
SAT: Critical Reading 530 and Total 1040, or
PLAN: English 22 and Composite 21, or
PSAT: Critical Reading or Writing 53 and Total 104

MST @ MSU

Mathematics-Science-Technology (MST) at Michigan State University
is a two-week summer residential program, July 15-28, for academically talented
students who are currently in grades 7, 8, or 9 with a minimum age of 12 years
old. The program has been designed to stimulate students to learn about new developments
in mathematics, science, and technology and to explore related career fields.

Eligibility

ACT: Math 21 or Composite 23
SAT: Math or Critical Reading 530 or Combined Total 1010
Additionally, a positive teacher recommendation from a current teacher of math, science, or technology and demonstrated potential in math, science,or technology
