Week of January 7th, 2013

We hope your break from school has been restful and full of fun activities!  School returns after Christmas break Monday, January 7, 2013.

In reading we will be reading “So You Want to be President.”  We will be learning interesting facts about presidents and the responsibility of being president.  Our skills focus will be: main idea and details; inferring; unknown words, suffix -ly; spelling patterns of ear, ir, our, ur, and plural possessive nouns.

In writing this week we will be learning about the key elements of persuasive writing and write one.

In math we are starting Chapter 3 – Part A.  This is a big chapter and we broke it down into 2 parts.  The first part will be learning about drawing an example to understand how to solve a problem and leading into solving word problems.

In Math RtI we will be spending 2 days on dividing by 5, and 3 days on dividing by 10s and 11s.  Hope your child had been practicing over Christmas break!  We will continue with practicing our division fluency in the weeks to come.

Week of Jan. 14:  divide by 6s

Week of Jan. 21:  divide by 7s

Week of Jan. 28: divide by 8s

Week of Feb. 4:  divide by 9s

Week of Feb. 11:  divide by 12s

Happy Thanksgiving!

We only have 2 1/2 days this week, one being a trip to the Michigan Historical Museum.

There will be no spelling words this week.  No Weekly Summary for this week.  No Math RtI math work this week.  You will find all these items  in your student’s Friday Folder (which will come home on Wednesday) for the week of November 26-30th.

Please remember that Wednesday, Nov. 21 is a 1/2 day of school!

If you need your child to retake any part of the Chapter 1 Final Test or the quizzes, please sign the actual Chapter 1 Final Test (or the quizzes) so that we know you have seen this test (or quiz).  The practice work from this chapter are now uploaded to the website under “Math.” The lessons have 2 pages of work your child can do to show practice on that skill.  Print them out, go over the mini lesson with your child on that is on the first page, have your student complete the work, SIGN the paper and send it in to your homeroom teacher.  Your child will have the opportunity to retake during a special or during a recess.

Science – if you want your student to retake the States of Matter Quiz 1, the study guide will be posted here under “Science” soon.  Be sure to sign the quiz and send it back in to the homeroom teacher so arrangements can be made for your child to retake it.

Parent/Teacher Conferences – A Change!

New this year in fourth grade will be how and when we do parent/teacher conferences.  We will be hosting conferences in our classrooms for our homeroom students and the scheduled dates are TUESDAY, Nov. 6 and THURSDAY, Nov. 8th.  We will not be meeting with parents of our switch students.  When you meet with your child’s homeroom teacher you can add your name to a list for the switch teacher.  The switch teacher will then contact you. A list of times has been sent home in Friday Folders on Friday, Oct. 26th.  Please check your child’s Friday Folder and return this paper to the homeroom teacher.

Halloween Costumes

Please keep in mind that we do have guidelines for Halloween costumes:  nothing gory, no weapons of any kind,
body fully covered
(no mid-riffs, tube tops, short shorts/skirts etc).  Halloween does not trump our regular dress code.  If a parent/guardian wants further explanation/specifics on what is acceptable and what is not acceptable, please contact our Principal, Andy Cox.

Thank you in advance for keeping these guidelines in mind.  We want everyone to have fun and participate fully in the festivities. :)

Mackinac Meeting – we had wonderful attendance, those parents/guardians who were unable to come, the information was included in your child’s Friday Folder.  Two important pieces of information that need your attention:  (1) please inform us of your child’s attendance for this trip and if there will be a chaperone from your family going on this trip, this form is due back by Oct. 12. (2) please note that a down payment is required of all attending this trip.  The down payment is $30.00.  This money is our downpayment to hold our trip in place.  Please have this paid to us by Oct. 28.
